(Actually, it&#8217;s\u00a0not all that &#8216;new&#8217; in our opinion because Hypnobirthing Australia has been including\u00a0it as a possible birth preference for mums in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hypnobirthingaustralia.com.au\/preparation-for-caesarean-birth-cesarean-c-section\/\">&#8216;Positive Caesarean Birth&#8217;<\/a> course\u00a0since 2011!)<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0British Medical Journal recently\u00a0released an article titled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/352\/bmj.i227\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8216;How should health professionals engage with this increasingly popular but unproven practice&#8217;<\/a>\u00a0and must admit I shook my head in disbelief when reading\u00a0the article.<\/p>\n<p>I wonder if the authors of this article have considered the fact that babies traditionally DO come out via the vaginal route. By saying that this practice is putting caesarean-born babies at unnecessary risk; are they saying that <em>all<\/em> vaginally born babies are put at unnecessary risk (because of the bacteria they are subjected to along the birth path)? Hmmmm.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps we should all go and wash our vaginas out with disinfectant right now! JOKE &#8211; PLEASE don&#8217;t do this!!!!!!.<\/p>\n<p>The article in the British Medical Journal also\u00a0left out the important findings\u00a0from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/nature.2016.19275\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recent research from the leading expert in birth and the microbiome, Dr Maria Dominguez-Bello<\/a>, Associate Professor in the Human Microbiome Programme at New York University.<\/p>\n<p>Along with a team of researchers, Dominguez-Bello used the\u00a0\u2018gauze seeding\u2019 technique on four babies born via caesarean, and compared the results with seven vaginally born babies, and seven born via caesarean but not \u2018seeded\u2019. The results, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/nature.2016.19275\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">published this month in the journal Nature<\/a>, found that the \u2018seeded\u2019 babies had skin, gut, anal and oral bacterial communities that more closely resembled the vaginally born babies.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, mothers would consult caregivers about the seeding preference beforehand and if there were high-risk factors to the baby (such as testing positive for group B strep and other conditions), then the seeding preference would need to be seriously reconsidered. We need our caregivers support, here. We&#8217;re not stupid!<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, rant over&#8230; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/health-fitness\/body\/vaginal-seeding-could-this-new-birth-trend-be-putting-babies-at\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">I wanted to share this particular article<\/a> because it is the best written of all the articles I have seen on the subject in the past few days.
